Commercial Driver’s License

The acronym “CDL” stands for “commercial driver’s license.” A commercial driving license is just like any driver’s license, except it allows you to legally operate commercial vehicles. This includes tow trucks and record. The other major difference is qualifying for commercial driver’s license. To get a regular driver’s license, all you need to do is pass simple written test and a brief field test.

But in order to get your CDL, you will need to be able to present the proper documentation, as well as, pass a series of classroom courses and field tests. And in all states, a person must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license to receive a commercial driving license. Additional requirements vary from state to state, so check with your Department of Transportation office for details on obtaining a CDL where you live.

Here is an Example:

If you live in a certain Hoosier state in the Midwest, you’ll also need to have a Social Security card, a valid medical card, proof of car insurance, enough insurance coverage for the vehicle you plan on using during your skills test, and a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination certification form completed by a licensed physician. Once you have all of your documents in order, you will need to take them to the nearest Driver’s License Division Office in your town. Be sure to choose an office that deals with CDLs. Many offices allow you to mail your documents if you so choose. Just be sure to get the proper contact information before filling out your envelope and sending it in the mail.

Quick Tip:

If you are serious about a career in the wrecker industry, try contacting some local tow truck companies for advice on getting your CDL. You may make some long-lasting relationships and set yourself up for a position as a tow truck driver before you even apply for your commercial driving license.
